We live in a culture that encourages a high standard of living, often unachievable by a single salary. But whether your significant other experiences a job loss, sickness, or just wants to put more focus on family, careful planning can make the transition to a single-income home much smoother.

Ideally, you would like 6-12 months to properly prepare for living on a single income. In cases where this is planning isn’t possible, communication between all family members will be key to making the adjustment.

Next you will want to work out a plan together to pay the bills and upcoming expenses, like vacations, retirement, and education savings. You also need to prioritize debt repayment, since those commitments will only get more cumbersome in the future.

Lifestyle is the biggest adjustment that is usually required for the transition. There are small changes, like cable, magazine subscriptions and phone packages, as well as big ones like keeping only a single vehicle or moving to a more affordable home. It might seem scary, but remember you don’t have to have to change who you are, just some things that you do.

Ultimately, even if you aren’t planning on living on a single income, you should prepare for that possible outcome. So start a savings account now and keep yourself one step ahead.

The post <a

Here are five easy steps you can take to reduce your debt and set yourself on

5. Say no to plastic—cards, not bags. The credit card itself is never the problem, without discipline they make it easy to spend money you don’t have.

4. Yes to needs, no to wants—there’s a sharp distinction between what people “need” and what they “want”. When you’re in debt, finding the discipline to draw that line is something you need to do!

3. Boil down the numbers— see that number at the bottom of your paycheck? That’s it – that’s all you get. Spend less than you make and you’ll stay out of debt, so write that number down and live by it.

2. Plan a “stay”cation—we all need a break once and a while, but going on a big trip can bring even more problems if you don’t play it smart. So save money by staying closer to home (short driving distance) so you can relax during, and after, your vacation.

1. Focus on simple pleasures—be grateful for what you have. You’ll be amazed how joy you’ll find by keeping a small gratitude journal each night to list the things you’re thankful for. You know what they say – the best things in life are free!

The post First of all, it’s difficult to negotiate with a creditor who has been ignored. Therefore, you should deal with creditors directly, and not try to run away from them. Most creditors respond best to written requests backed by detailed plans.

Letters aren’t just a formality, they’re required by creditors. The letter should state your financial problem and explain what has happened to cause you to default on your scheduled payments.

Include up-to-date detailed financial statements that show exactly where your debts lie. And don’t forget to include your new monthly budget that illustrates how the creditors will be repaid each month. At the end, you’ll want to request their written acceptance of your proposal.

Now show them the money – include the first agreed upon payment to get the process started. This is your best bet for getting the deal on track quickly. Just make sure that once you’ve made the initial commitment, you stick to it.

To help you along, it’s smart to use an objective third party such as Doyle Salewski. We deal with creditors every day and have helped thousands of people just like you.

Note that if your plan of repayment cannot realistically pay your creditors in full with interest, then you should consult with Doyle Salewski. Only a firm like Doyle Salewski may legally commit creditors to a repayment of only a partial amount of your debt in return for full forgiveness of your obligations to all your creditors.

The post <a

The demands of a typical lifestyle can challenge even the best salary. But what do you do when the pace gets too hectic and the money gets too tight? When the fear of missing out lures you into an unsustainable lifestyle?

Everyone wants financial margin – the latitude to spend money without worrying about making ends meet. But how do we get there? Margin planning is an easy three-step process that looks like this:

1. Identify your annual “Available Income”:

Annual income (minus)

• Taxes
• Debt payments
• Fixed obligations

= Available Income

2. Determine your “Disposable Income” (includes a savings goal)

Available Income (minus)

• Savings goal %

= Disposable Income (divide by 12 to get Monthly Consumable Income)

3. Develop a plan

• Track where your money is going
• Save something starting now!
• Include a debt reduction strategy
• Include a lifestyle reduction goal and budget

The post <a
