The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a lifeline for low-income workers, with an annual adjustment in response to inflation. In the fiscal year of 2023-24, the CWB can provide up to $1,518 for single eligible workers, and $2,616 for eligible families, indicating a 6.3% increase compared to 2022.
if you were a CWB beneficiary in 2022, rest easy knowing these advance payments will reach you automatically. If you’re eligible for the CWB disability supplement, In 2023–24, the disability supplement for CWB is up to $784. You should expect to see half of your 2023–24 supplement as part of the new advance payments.
Advance CWB payments have been scheduled, starting from July 28, 2023, with subsequent payments on October 12, 2023, and January 12, 2024. A final payment will follow after the 2023 tax return is filed.
Should you not receive a CWB payment on the specified dates, it’s advisable to wait for 10 business days before reaching out to the CRA.
The eligibility for Canada Workers Benefit is based on:
- Income level
- Age (19 years of age or older)
- Residential status in Canada
- Having a spouse, common-law partner, or a child under 19 years
For the CWB disability supplement, one must:
- Be eligible for the disability tax credit
- Have a net income within the specified provincial or territorial limits
However, full-time students (unless they have a dependent), imprisoned individuals, and diplomats or their employees exempt from paying Canadian taxes do not qualify for the CWB.
The CWB amount is calculated yearly, taking into account marital status, provincial or territorial residence, earned working income, adjusted family net income, disability tax credit eligibility, and having an eligible dependent. If you qualify for the CWB but haven’t been receiving it, you can claim it in your next income tax return.
