Carleton Place, a charming town along the Mississippi River, has been steadily growing for over two centuries. Originally established as a timber trade hub in the Ottawa Valley, the town quickly became a centre of industry with thriving textile mills, engine parts factories, and foundries. Today, Carleton Place preserves its historical charm while embracing modern development. The town’s scenic riverfront remains a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, offering picturesque canoeing and outdoor activities.

While Carleton Place’s connection to the water is undeniable, its most remarkable contributions come from the skies. Just south of town lies the Carleton Place Airport, a private airfield maintained by local enthusiasts. Carleton Place also holds a place in aviation history for its production of the Crash Position Indicator, a groundbreaking precursor to the black box developed in the 1960s. During World War I, the town produced an extraordinary number of RAF fighter pilots, including the famous Captain Arthur “Roy” Brown, who is credited with downing the Red Baron in one of the most legendary dogfights in aviation history.
